Varfell Farms, the world’s largest daffodil grower, has taken a major step forward in its sustainability journey with the installation of over 1,000 solar panels at its new packhouse facility in Penzance, Cornwall. The project, delivered in partnership with renewable energy specialists CleanEarth, marks one of the largest roof-mounted solar installations in the South West.
The new solar installation will generate more than 460,000 kWh of clean electricity annually and reduce Varfell’s carbon footprint by 90 tonnes each year. This milestone reinforces Varfell Farms’ commitment to reducing its environmental impact and supporting the UK’s transition to net zero.
“It’s a huge step forward in our mission to significantly reduce our carbon footprint,” said Simon Gardner, Farms Director at Varfell Farms. “We’re proud to lead the way in sustainable farming and demonstrate that large-scale agriculture can embrace renewable energy solutions.”
In the past year, Varfell Farms has undertaken significant expansions, now operating across 6,000 acres and introducing a state-of-the-art packhouse, dispatch area, and cold storage facilities. These developments ensure the business remains at the forefront of efficiency, innovation, and sustainability in the horticultural sector.
Varfell Farms is already recognised as an environmentally responsible business. In 2023, the company became a Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) Demonstration Farm, showcasing regenerative farming practices and championing biodiversity. As leaders in Cornwall’s net zero charge initiative, Varfell Farms aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable agriculture in the UK.
Named Supermarket Floral and Plant Supplier of the Year at the 2025 FPC awards, Varfell Farms have been proudly growing daffodils since 1885. Situated on over 6,000 acres of Cornish land, Varfell produces over 500 million hand-picked daffodils, processes more than 13,000 tonnes of bulbs, and supplies 2 million stems of summer flowers each year to multiple major retailers. Varfell Farms is part of the greosn group, investors in leading brands across fresh produce and horticulture globally, delivering innovation, sustainability and security.
