Newey is celebrating Commercial Manager John Hedger’s 50 years with the business, recognising his contribution to its growth and his commitment to developing the next generation of horticultural talent.

John joined New Place Nurseries, which would later become Newey, in 1976 to help build and expand its nursery operation. Five decades on, he remains instrumentally involved in the business, overseeing the tree department, propagation and liner production planning, while working with teams across the company.

His interest in horticulture began at a young age, inspired by his parents’ passion for gardening, John grew and propagated shrubs in the family garden, selling them to local garden centres. At 15, he began working Saturdays at a nursery in Exeter, before going on to study horticulture at Hadlow College, where he completed his Ordinary National Diploma (OND).

Since joining the business, John has helped expand its production capabilities and establish its reputation as a respected wholesale nursery. His practical experience and commercial knowledge have helped guide Newey through five decades of growth and change.

Frank Kinsella, Divisional Director at Newey, said:

"John Hedger is the epitome of this business. I don't know anybody else who has seen the amount of change that John has seen in this industry. His experience, knowledge and commitment are truly exceptional."

During John’s five decades with the business, a series of strategic acquisitions and partnerships has brought together the nurseries that form Newey today. This journey has continued with Newey becoming part of the wider greosn group. Throughout these changes, John has provided continuity, sharing his knowledge and helping build strong working relationships across the business.

Alongside his work developing the nursery, John has supported generations of colleagues and encouraged many young people into pursuing a career in horticulture.

Among them is greosn group Commercial Director Mike Norris, who joined the Newey business as a student. The two have worked closely together for many years, building a lasting friendship alongside their professional relationship.

Mike Norris said:

“I first met John in 1996, when I was a student studying horticulture. He was an incredible ambassador for horticulture at the time and still is today. One of the nicest guys, if not the nicest guy in horticulture. So congratulations, John. We're all behind you. Well done.”

For John, the people he has helped develop are among his proudest achievements. Some colleagues who worked alongside him decades ago remain with the business, while others have gone on to become leaders elsewhere in the horticultural sector.

Reflecting on his 50 years with the business, John Hedger said:

"Looking back, I'm proud of what we've achieved as a business over the last 50 years. We've seen a lot of change, a lot of growth and plenty of challenges along the way, but it's been a privilege to be part of that journey and to work alongside so many dedicated people. I love what I do, I love the business, and I'm so lucky to be working around a great group of people. What's not to love?"

As John celebrates this remarkable milestone, his dedication to horticulture remains as strong as ever. While many would be looking towards retirement after half a century in the industry, John continues to look ahead to the next season, the next challenge and the next opportunity to improve, leaving an enduring legacy on both Newey and the wider horticultural industry.
